Max Payne

Journey into the gritty and not particularly pleasant world of Max Payne. This third person action game features a strong storyline and an altogether interesting antihero. Max Payne is a gritty journey to the present day New York City during the worst winter blizzard in a century. The thriller pulp story keeps the players guessing right on till the end. The game shoots from the lowest slum pits to the greatest skyscraper heights, leaving behind a trail of corpses, splatters of blood, and empty brass rolling on the floor.

This sequel reflects the same over-the-top comic book style of the original Wolfenstein 3D. However, by using the powerful graphics technology of the QUAKE III Arena engine and a new scripting system, Return to Castle Wolfenstein pulls the player further into a chilling storyline filled with frightening tales of bio-engineering and the occult. Devotees of multiplayer action can jump online and frag it out within the unique Wolfenstein world.

Rainbow Six

You are the leader of Rainbow Six, a super-secret organization put together by the U.N. to fight terrorism. Your team is made up of the best of the best from countries around the world. When someone starts trouble, and the political situation makes things to hot for local enforcement to handle, your team comes in and takes care of business. The game itself is a first-person shooter with a real eye towards realism. Before each mission, you select which members of your team you're going to take with you into a fight, arm them with the appropriate real-world weaponry, divide them into teams, and then plot out on a map where each team is going to go, and what actions they're going to take. Once you leave the plotting stage, you choose which one of the squad leaders you'll play as and the mission begins. Each mission has its own objectives, but most of them revolve around rescuing hostages, stealing information, or other covert actions.

Deus Ex

Deus Ex's gameplay features and story elements, as well as the expansiveness of the game's environments and the scope of its setting, add up to a satisfying and unusual experience.

Veteran designer Warren Spector has always been known for making games that combine action and role-playing elements within seamless 3D environments in order to create the most plausible interactive worlds possible. He's worked on such critically acclaimed game series as Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Thief, and his latest game, Deus Ex, is similar. It's an ambitious 3D game that defies simple classification, and though some of its individual elements are either overused or underdeveloped, the aggregate experience of playing Deus Ex proves to be both unique and worthwhile.

Savage: Battle For Newearth

As you may already know, Savage is one of the first games to blend first-person shooting with real-time strategy. Unlike most games these days, which are essentially copies of older games that were successful, Savage actually brings something genuinely new to gameplay. One player on each team assumes the role of commander, giving them a 3rd person perspective of the game, while the rest of the players engage in first-person combat much like any other shooter.

GTA III

Mob bosses need favors, crooked cops need help, the street gangs want you dead; so to compensate you'll have to rob, steal, and kill in order to stay alive, while using your resources to track down the woman who betrayed you and earn your rightful revenge. But that's all in a day's work in Rockstar Games' ambitious PS2 sequel, Grand Theft Auto III. Developed by DMA Design, GTA3 is the first installment of the series to utilize a fully three-dimensional living city with open environments and non-linear gameplay. Additional features include a cast of hundreds of different characters, more than 50 types of vehicles, three hours of professionally recorded music, and a huge array of deadly street weapons.

Thief(1998): Gold Edition

Redneck Rampage

This game quietly came onto the scene, built on the then-significant Build engine that made games like Duke Nukem 3D popular. It never had a very big following, but was mostly critically acclaimed. In this hilarious first-person shooter, you guide Leonard and Bubba through levels in order to rescue your prize pig from the aliens (okay, at least that's kind of original...) Prepare for some great redneck jokes as you shoot down alien-cloned enemies with your shotgun and eat ribs and drink beer!

Battlefield 1942

In Battlefield 1942, players are dropped into the middle of a World War II battlefield and forced to find a path to victory both for them and for the soldiers on their side. While the game has a single player component, it's the multiplayer mode that's the bigger focus as 64 players can shoot it out in a variety of WWII theaters.

The action takes place on the land, in the air and on the sea. While your main means of transportation is the trusty boot, there are also 32 controllable vehicles in the game that run the gamut from jeeps to trucks, planes to boats.

System Shock 2

Choose your path, choose your weapons, choose your skills and then immerse yourself in what is arguably one of the most frightening, eerie and simply amazing titles around. It's a kind of action-intensive RPG that few can even come close to touching. System Shock 2 set a new approachable precedent for all first-person perspective games. It's loaded with so many extras that exploration and interaction were necessities. Cybernetic monsters, rogue robots and a bunch of mutants called "The Many" dot an adventure that should not be missed by anyone with a backbone and a brain. Watch out for them psi- monkeys!

Call of Duty

There is no shortage of World War II-themed first-person shooters available, and it's no secret that a number of them, including Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942, are extremely good. Now you can add Call of Duty to that list. The first game by Infinity Ward, a studio composed of some of the same team that worked on Allied Assault, Call of Duty presents outstanding action all around and is at least as good as, and in several ways is simply better than, any similar game. Though both its single-player and multiplayer modes will be familiar to those who've been keeping up with the WWII-themed shooters of the past several years, most anyone who plays games would more than likely be very impressed with Call of Duty's authentic presentation, well designed and often very intense single-player missions, and fast-paced, entertaining multiplayer modes.

Command and Conquer: Renegade

Command & Conquer Renegade is a fast-paced 3D action game that brings you closer to Command & Conquer than ever before. This time you are on foot in the C&C universe as you wage war at ground level among the structures, vehicles and weapons made famous in the series. You assume the role of Havoc, wise-cracking GDI commando who fights and explores from a gripping first-person viewpoint. Perfect Dark

Few games have been more eagerly anticipated than Rare's unofficial sequel to GoldenEye 007, one of the best titles to come out over the last few years for the Nintendo 64 or otherwise. Though Perfect Dark's style and feel might not fall too far from the Bond tree, it's clear that Rare has created another title that alone warrants buying the system.

The premise of Perfect Dark is that you are a special government agent on a near-future Earth. Your agency has made friendly contact with a group of aliens known as the Maians, those big-headed gray little men made popular in Whitley Strieber books and Fox TV specials. At roughly the same time, the evil dataDyne corporation has allied itself with the equally evil Skedar, an alien race that practices war as religion, placing them at odds with the Maians. Thus, conflict ensues, first in the realm of industrial espionage, and then... beyond.

Counter Strike 1.6(multiplayer)

Based on the legendary Half-Life PC mod, Counter-Strike is an FPS that pits terrorists against counter-terrorists in a variety of different game modes. Set in realistic locales throughout the world, including the jungles of Asia, frost lands of Europe, and sweltering areas of Colombia, players will get a chance to use over 25 real-life weapons, including shotguns, sniper rifles, pistols and Xbox exclusive gear like a riot shield, blowtorch, and fiber optic camera. Counter-Strike includes many elements of the original PC release, plus 20 of the single-player missions from Condition Zero, Xbox exclusive maps, 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, and 480p support.

Half-life

Gordon Freeman is nothing but a lowly research assistant at the Black Mesa Federal Research Facility, and has no idea that an experiment is about to go awry one which will tear a hole into another dimension and unleash a flood of otherworldly creatures. In HALF-LIFE, players must guide Gordon as he attempts to locate the scientists responsible for the accident and set things right, while fighting off beasts and solving a variety of puzzles. Players will witness all the action from a first-person point of view, as they blast away with the powerful weapons found in the PC original, as well as new gear and levels never seen before

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder

Ghost Recon puts the player in charge of a fictitious, newly-conceived squad of U.S. Special Forces operators from Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (5th SFG) stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Except for the "5th SFG" designation, this unit is entirely fictional. They are sometimes referred to as "The Ghosts". Their role is not unlike other real world Special Operations Forces, in that their operations are kept highly classified.

The Ghosts are organized into three fireteams named using the NATO phonetic alphabet: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie, with a maximum of three soldiers per team. However, since the player can only assign a total of six men in a single player mission, it is not uncommon for one of the fireteams to be disregarded, depending on the preference of the player. The player enjoys limited tactical control on the battlefield environment, and can issue maneuver commands as well as rules of engagement for each of the fireteams through a command map. It should be noted that the Xbox and PS2 versions of Ghost Recon do not have Charlie teams.

Soldier Of fortune 2

Players once again assume the role of John Mullins, a military consultant working for the top-secret anti-terrorist group known as The Shop. In the game, players must tackle a wide-range of missions, from hostage rescue and intelligence gathering, to search-and-destroy missions.

Soldier of Fortune II brings to gaming a vivid damage modeling and animation system for body destruction. The game also includes an accurate reproductions of actual weapons and missions taken from international hotspots including Prague, Colombia, Hong Kong and Kamchatka. Level design in Soldier of Fortune II is flexible enough to allow for multiple styles of play. "Hit `em hard" with a frontal assault or use stealth weapons for a subtle approach.

Starsiege: Tribes

Sierra Online used to be the biggest thing going for online action games. One of the favorite titles from their catalog was the online sci-fi shooter Tribes. Players flew around in jetpacks, launching energy discs at each other in intense online matches. Long before Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and a host of other imitators, Tribes offered up more than 32 player support, different player classes, a variety of weapon kits and a handful of multi-passenger vehicles. Loads of gameplay types, a wide variety of maps, and plenty of team-oriented features (and a lack of copy protection) made Tribes one of the most popular online shooters around

Quake 3: Arena

Alien Versus Predator

The game is a first person shooter (FPS), but differs from most other FPS in that the player can choose the perspective to play from : Alien, Predator or Human (Colonial Marine). These different perspectives afford distinct capabilities and weapons.

In the most conventional case, playing as a human is the most similar to other FPS, and the player is able to access a wide array of weaponry (mostly that from the films). As well as powerful weaponry, Marines wear armour for protection and have an image intensifier and flares to improve visibility in dark environments.

007 Goldeneye+Tomorrow never dies

GoldenEye closely mirrors the plot of the 17th James Bond movie, starting with the daring bungee jump sequence and ending with a showdown between 007 and Alec Trevelyan atop a huge antenna. Civilization 4

Civilization IV is a turn-based game in which the player builds an empire from scratch. All standard full-length games begin in 4000 BC with a settler that builds a single city. From there, the player expands an empire while contending with rival nations, utilizing the geography, developing infrastructure, and encouraging scientific and cultural progress. By default, players can win the game by accomplishing one of five goals: conquering all other civilizations, controlling the majority of the world's land and population, being the first to construct a space ship capable of colonizing Alpha Centauri, increasing the Culture ratings of three different cities to "legendary" levels, and by being declared "World Leader" after first becoming Secretary-General of the United Nations. If the game's clock runs out (by default in the year 2050 AD) with none of these goals fulfilled by any nation, the nation with the highest score is declared the winner.
